Step 2: Pre-Race Hydration (Race Morning)

- Miles 23–26.2: Drink to thirst. If you have been hydrating well, you may not need much in the final miles. A final sip at mile 24 is usually sufficient. Focus on pace and effort, not hydration, in the closing kilometres.
Adjusting for Weather
Weather is the most significant variable in your hydration plan. Use these adjustments:
- Cool conditions (under 12°C / 54°F): Reduce hourly intake by 20–30%. The thirst mechanism is blunted in cold weather, but so is sweat rate. Risk shifts toward over-drinking.
- Moderate conditions (12–20°C / 54–68°F): Use your baseline plan. This is the ideal racing range where sweat rate and fluid absorption are well-matched.
