There is a persistent myth that long runs should be done in a depleted state to "train the body to burn fat." While low-carbohydrate training has a legitimate role in endurance periodisation, applying it indiscriminately to all long runs undermines both training quality and race preparation. Most recreational athletes who undereat on long runs do so not as a deliberate strategy but as an afterthought — they simply don't carry enough fuel.

The long run serves multiple purposes beyond aerobic conditioning: it is the primary opportunity to rehearse your race-day fueling plan. A runner who has never practised taking gels every 30 minutes at race pace will struggle physiologically and psychologically on race day when that strategy is deployed under race stress.

Why You Need to Fuel Training Long Runs

For long runs exceeding 75–90 minutes, fueling during the run improves several key training adaptations:

  • Training quality: Well-fuelled runs allow you to maintain the intended pace in the second half, which is where the majority of training stimulus is derived. A fasted long run that deteriorates into a shuffle in the final 40 minutes is less effective than a fuelled run maintained at target effort.
  • Gut training: The ability to absorb gels at race pace is a trainable adaptation. Regular practice of fueling while running teaches the gut to absorb carbohydrates efficiently in a running-specific blood flow state, reducing race-day GI issues.

When Do You Need On-Run Fueling?

The caveat: hot conditions, high intensity (tempo runs, marathon-pace long runs), or consecutive training days compress this threshold — in those contexts, fueling from 45–60 minutes is appropriate even for shorter sessions.
